Chiller van vs. freezer van

Chiller van vs. freezer van

Chiller van vs. freezer van: Which one do you need?

They look the same from the outside. Inside, one keeps your goods fresh and the other keeps them frozen, and picking the wrong one ruins the load. Here’s how to choose.

It’s the question we’re asked more than any other, and it’s the one that decides whether a load arrives perfect or ruined. Chiller and freezer vans can look identical parked side by side. The difference is entirely in the temperature they’re built to hold and that difference is the whole decision.

The one difference that matters

Strip everything else away, and it comes to this:

  • chiller van holds 0–8 °C, cold enough to keep fresh goods fresh without freezing them.
  • freezer van holds around −18°C, cold enough to keep frozen goods frozen solid.

Get the band wrong in either direction, and you damage the load. Put fresh lettuce, herbs, or flowers into a freezer van, and they freeze, wilt, and turn to mush on thaw. Put ice cream or frozen meat into a chiller van, and it slowly, expensively melts. The vehicles aren’t interchangeable; they’re tuned for different jobs.

When you need a chiller van

Choose a chiller van when your goods must stay cold but not freeze. That covers most fresh perishables:

  • Fresh produce: fruit, vegetables, herbs, salads
  • Dairy milk, yoghurt, cheese, labneh
  • Fresh meat and fish (chilled, not frozen)
  • Fresh flowers and floral arrangements
  • Most pharmaceuticals and vaccines, which sit at 2–8 °C
  • Chilled ready meals, sandwiches, and prepared food

For the majority of UAE food and pharma businesses, the chiller van is the workhorse, the vehicle they actually need day to day.

When you need a freezer van

Choose a freezer van when your goods must stay frozen solid the whole way:

  • Ice cream, gelato, and frozen desserts
  • Frozen meat, poultry, and seafood
  • Frozen ready meals and par-baked goods
  • Frozen vegetables and fruit
  • Anything labelled “keep frozen”

In UAE heat, frozen goods are the least forgiving cargo there is, which is why moving them well is its own topic. If that’s your world, see our guide on how to transport frozen food safely.

What if you carry both?

Plenty of operations, a hotel, a catering group, and a mixed-goods distributor need chilled and frozen on the same route. You have two sensible options. Run two vehicles, or run one multi-temperature (dual-zone) van with a partition, a chiller on one side, and a freezer on the other, each holding its own band. For a single mixed route, the dual-zone van usually wins on cost and simplicity.

The compromise that isn’t one

People sometimes ask us to “just set one van somewhere in the middle.” There is no safe middle: a temperature cold enough to keep ice cream frozen will freeze fresh produce, and a temperature safe for produce will melt the ice cream. Two bands need two zones or two vans.

How to decide in 30 seconds

Ask one question about your goods: Do they need to arrive frozen, or just cold?

  • “Must stay frozen solid” → freezer van (−18 °C).
  • “Must stay cold but not freeze” → chiller van (0–8 °C).
  • “Some of each” → multi-temperature van, or two vehicles.

Still unsure? Tell us what you’re moving and how far, and we’ll point you to the right one; that’s a normal part of the conversation, not something you’re expected to know cold.

The decision in one line

  • Chiller van = 0–8°C for fresh goods that must not freeze.
  • Freezer van = around −18 °C for goods that must stay frozen.
  • Carrying both? Use a dual-zone multi-temp van rather than compromising on one temperature.

Both vehicles and where to go once you’ve made your choice.

  • Chiller van rental: 0–8°C fresh loads
  • Freezer van rental: -18°C frozen loads
  • Refrigerated van hub: Compare the full range
  • Truck vs van: The size decision
  • Transport frozen food: Frozen, done right
  • Pricing & quote: What each costs

Know which van you need?

Chiller or freezer, from a single day to a long-term contract pre-cooled and ready across the UAE. Please let us know your load, and we will confirm the fit.

FAQ About Chiller vs. Freezer Vans

Q: What is the difference between a chiller van and a freezer van?

A chiller van holds 0–8 °C to keep goods fresh without freezing them; a freezer van holds around -18 °C to keep goods frozen solid. The difference is the temperature band, and it decides which loads each can carry. Can a chiller van keep ice cream frozen? Will a freezer van damage fresh produce?

Q: Can a chiller van keep ice cream frozen?

No. A chiller van only goes down to about 0°C, so ice cream and other frozen goods would slowly melt. Frozen products need a freezer van at around -18°C.

Q: Will a freezer van damage fresh produce?

Yes, fresh produce, herbs, and flowers freeze and are ruined at −18 °C. Fresh goods that must not freeze should travel in a chiller van at 0–8°C.

Q: What if I need to carry chilled and frozen goods together?

Use a multi-temperature (dual-zone) van with a partition so each side holds its band, or run two vehicles. Setting one van to a ‘middle’ temperature damages both loads.
