Refrigerated Truck vs. Van

Refrigerated truck vs van: Which should you rent?
Once you’ve settled on a chiller or freezer, the next question is size: van or truck? It comes down to how much you move, how far, and where you have to squeeze in.
Table of Contents
Chiller or freezer is a question about temperature. A van or truck is a question about size, and the two are entirely separate. You can have a chiller van, a chiller truck, a freezer van, or a freezer truck. Once you know your temperature band, the second decision is the other decision, and it hinges on how much you move, how far, and how tight the delivery points are.
Two different decisions
Keep them separate in your head, and the choice becomes easy. First, temperature: fresh (0–8 °C) or frozen (−18 °C)? That’s covered in the chiller vs. freezer van section. Second, size: a nimble van for smaller, local, multi-drop work, or a truck for pallets, bulk, and long inter-emirate hauls? This guide is about that second axis.
When a van is right
A refrigerated van is the better call when your loads are small-to-medium and your routes are urban and stop-heavy:
- Last-mile and city delivery — restaurants, cafés, pharmacies, florists, mini-marts.
- Multi-drop routes with many small stops.
- Tight access — residential streets, mall service bays, narrow loading areas where a truck simply can’t go.
- Daily restocking in modest volumes.
Vans are cheaper to hire, easier to park and manoeuvre, and quicker in and out of dense drops. For most food-service and retail delivery in the emirates’ cities, the van is the everyday tool.
When a truck is right
A refrigerated (reefer) truck earns its place when volume or distance grows:
- Pallet loads and bulk — distributors, wholesalers, retail-chain restocking.
- Inter-emirate hauls — moving stock between Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and the northern emirates in one run.
- Fewer, larger drops — delivering big quantities to a handful of receiving points rather than dozens of small ones.
- Factory-to-DC or DC-to-store movements.
If you’re running several van-loads a day over the same route, one truck is usually cheaper and simpler. Trucks come in chiller and freezer forms too — for example a chiller truck for bulk fresh produce, dairy and beverages.
Van vs truck at a glance
| Refrigerated van | Refrigerated truck | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical payload | ~1,000–5,000 kg | Pallet-scale / bulk |
| Best routes | City, last-mile, multi-drop | Bulk, inter-emirate, few large drops |
| Access | Tight streets, service bays | Needs space to manoeuvre & unload |
| Hire cost | Lower | Higher (but cheaper per unit of volume) |
| Sweet spot | Small–medium daily loads | High volume & distance |
The access factor people forget
The biggest truck that fits isn’t always the answer
We’ve seen operations size up to a truck for the payload, then discover the truck can’t get into half their delivery points — a mall’s service lift, a restaurant’s back alley, a residential tower’s loading bay. Payload is only half the question. If your drops are tight, two van runs can beat one truck that has to double-park on a main road. Map your actual receiving points before you size up.
Choosing the size
Three quick questions settle it:
- How much per run? Boxes and small quantities → van. Pallets and bulk → truck.
- How far and how many stops? Many small city drops → van. Few big drops or inter-emirate → truck.
- Can a truck physically get in? If your points are tight, the van wins regardless of payload.
And you don’t have to pick one forever. Plenty of operations run vans for city delivery and call in a truck for the big weekly inter-emirate haul. Tell us your volumes, routes and drop points and we’ll size it with you — including flagging when a mix is cheaper than one or the other.
Van or truck, in short
- Temperature (chiller/freezer) and size (van/truck) are separate decisions.
- Van = small–medium, city, multi-drop, tight access, lower cost.
- Truck = pallets, bulk, inter-emirate, fewer large drops.
- Check access before sizing up — a truck that can’t reach the door helps no one.

FAQ
Refrigerated truck vs van — FAQ
Should I rent a refrigerated van or a refrigerated truck?
Choose a van for small-to-medium loads, city and last-mile delivery, multi-drop routes and tight access. Choose a truck for pallets, bulk, inter-emirate hauls and fewer, larger drops. Check that a truck can physically reach your delivery points first. Is a refrigerated truck cheaper than a van?Do refrigerated trucks come as chiller and freezer too?Can I use both vans and trucks?
Is a refrigerated truck cheaper than a van?
A truck costs more to hire outright but is usually cheaper per unit of volume for large loads. If you’d otherwise run several van-loads a day over the same route, one truck is often the more economical choice.
Do refrigerated trucks come as chiller and freezer too?
Yes. Like vans, trucks come in chiller form (0–8 °C) for fresh loads and freezer form (around −18 °C) for frozen. Temperature and size are separate choices.
Can I use both vans and trucks?
Many operations do vans for daily city delivery and a truck for larger inter-emirate or weekly bulk runs. We can size a mix and put it on one account.
